PB Catered Affairs began with cookies. Really good cookies. To support her family, Grandma Maggie (Paula’s mother) sold baked goods to people in the Altoona area, and one of the most popular events was “Cookie Sunday” held the week before Christmas. Clients would visit her Broad Avenue home to sample, purchase and order cookies. More than 600 dozen cookies were sold each year during that week. And even at that high volume, the cookies were always fresh out of the oven. Never frozen.
This standard of high quality, the desire to succeed, a love of good home-style cooking, and plain old hard work were therefore instilled in the family from the very beginning.
In 1984 several friends of the owners, Paula and David Binus, asked them to provide food items to help round out menus for parties and celebrations. Never one to say, “no,” the Binuses fulfilled these orders. As they transition into catering, Paula and David’s own children were young, so the Binuses committed these special requests on a very limited basis. But as their children grew, so did the business. The famous ‘cinnamon rolls’ for football and soccer players, coaches, and teachers, as well as ham and cheese sandwiches for fundraisers were simply a continuation of their desire to make good food and help others.
In 1990, friends’ requests for food items blossomed into friends of friends calling to ask for similar menus, because they had attended a function catered by Paula, David, and staff. These calls have now resulted in a 150% growth of the company.
No event is too big or too small. Birthday celebrations, weddings, anniversaries, rehearsal dinners, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Brazilian Barbeques, Wild Boar Roast, Lebanese dinners, whatever the need, the business simply emerged on its own due to the high quality and service.
The services provided by Catered Affairs would not be possible without great staff. The Binuses feel truly blessed and thankful to their employees who have made the company what it is today and for the many customers they have had the privilege to work with over the years. The staff, along with Paula, David, David, and Erica, donate countless hours to community causes such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Blair County, ARC of Blair County, the Cancer Society, and the Tyrone Senior Center, to name a few.
Catered Affairs is proud to be a member of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce. Looking to the future, our goal is to continue to be committed to ourselves, our employees, our industry and the residents of Blair and surrounding counties by providing high quality food and great service.
